Asda has recalled a batch of its Sliced Hot & Spicy Chicken Breast Slices due to a labelling error that could pose a food safety risk.

The recall affects products marked with the use-by date 30 May and the barcode 506308913170.

According to the supermarket chain, the product has been “packed with the incorrect use-by date” and should not be consumed.

In an online notice, Asda said:

We are very sorry for any inconvenience caused. If you would like any further information, please contact: Asda Customer Relations – 0800 952 0101.”

Shoppers who have purchased the affected product are advised to return it to any Asda store, wher they will receive a full refund, even without a receipt. Point-of-sale notices explaining the recall have also been displayed in all stores wher the product was sold.

Consumers seeking further information can also visit the Food Standards Agency website or contact Asda’s customer service team, which is supporting the recall process.

Recent fine for out-of-date food

The recall follows a recent enforcement action against Asda, who were fined £410,000 after Trading Standards found expired food on sale at its Penryn and Hayle stores in Cornwall.

Inspections in late 2023 uncovered 62 out-of-date products across the two stores, including “ready-to-eat” items such as children’s yoghurts that were almost four weeks past their expiration date.

In response to the fine, an Asda spokesperson said:

The safety of our customers is always our top priority, and we regret that out-of-date products were found on sale at two of our Cornwall stores during October and November 2023.

Since these instances, we have implemented a new date code checking process in all stores, ensuring that every short life product is checked daily.”
